Just a Meez moment...

A few pictures I took of Meez this Sunday. And for those who don't know her as Meez, Julia. She goes by a few names around here...

Dancing chickens

This video is quite old, but I just found it. It is from September of 2007! I really want to put music to it, but I am not sure how.

I was originally trying to get a video of Julia flying up, but when I watched it I realized what was going on in the background. I think there is a name for that dance....I don't know what it is... (and don't say "the chicken dance")...

A Wayward Winter

There are eleven days left of Winter, but that hasn't stopped the snow before. When I was in first grade there was snow on the first day of Spring. Unlike the last post, I have some pictures to display for you. I hope you like them, and enjoy the snow!
This is a large cedar tree on our property. I really liked the contrast of the green of moss and the white of the snow. I think it creates a nice effect.
Looking out the front door...
The view out my bedroom window. And I had to drag chickens in, since this is a chicken blog. I took Meez for a short walk, keeping her quite warm of course. However, I had an "Anna incident" as I have come to call it, and I put her away soon after. Enjoy the snow while it last and for those of us who are in school: Keep your fingers crossed for a snow day tomorrow!

Me and Meez

Here is some more pictures of Meez and me from Sunday. It was so sunny outside! Meez was very tired however, as you can see in the Sunday post.

Rock a bye Chicken....

Someones' eyelids were getting heavy! Meez was just relaxing after a hard day in the coop. Chickens, like hawks, close their eyes up, as you can see in the picture.

By the way, if you didn't already know, Meez is short for Julia Child.

Julia's Photo shoot

Today was such a beautiful, clear and warm day. Emma and I had the neighbors over and ran around outside the whole day! It was a great opportunity to do a photo shoot too! Little Julia was our subject, and she turned out to be an amazing model.
Easily the best picture!
Easily the second best!
This gives you a good idea what the weather was like. Not a cloud in sight!

It is actually very difficult to get a good picture of a chicken because they shift around so frequently. Although it makes it that much more rewarding when you get a good one!

Summer memories

This is a picture from this summer of my mom and Julia. The chickens would just hop right up on the swing while she knit. They never did it for Emma and I, though.

This summer was great, and so is this winter. I am not to fond of this in-between weather, though!

Taking Flight

Here is a few great pictures of Pearl and Julia flying into the aviary. We had to clean the coop today, so we(my sister and I) took a few pictures of the chicks. These pictures were pretty hard to get, so appreciate them to their fullest extent!

Flight of Meez

This is a movie I took a while ago. You might notice my voice sounds funny, but that is because I had a cold. It gets pretty cute toward the end. You will understand why it is called "Flight of Meez"

By the way, Meez is a nickname for Julia. It is rather complicated how she got it!

Struting with Purpose!

One thing rewarding about having chickens is they are exciting to watch. That may sound boring, but it is actually quite an enjoyable pass time. You see, when they walk it looks like they have gum stuck to there feet, which is very amusing to observe! When the chickens are outside they move very quick and sharp movements, because they don't always get to be outside their coop. All right, I think I have given you enough description, now you can see the pictures!
Julia just looks like a little blur!

Two years that flew by!

Here are a few pictures of the chickens when they were younger. These are about when they were three months old. They were just beginning to et there feathers. You can still see all the chick fluff on their heads though! They grow up so fast! Julia is standing on the feeder and Pearl is standing on the water can.
Jasper and Julia anre looking at the camera.

That would be Pearl. She sure made some mischief!

Jasper and Julia again.

Somebody's hungry!

Here is a movie of some hungry chickens. I just cleaned the coop and fed them, so they are pretty excited in this video. The movie is kind of long, so you don't have to watch the whole thing! This movie stars Julia, Lemony, Jasper and Doc.

Out and About

Today was a great day for the chickens. They were out and about for an hour pecking, chewing and all the other strange things chickens do. We let 7 chickens out, so basically all the older chickens except Richie. If Richie got out side he would go nuts. He did once actually and Dad had to chase him around the yard a few times to catch him. Here are a few pictures of them enjoying the sunshine today.

J.K. looking strange.

Chickens and cat interactions

For the most part the chickens and the cat don't interact too much. When they were chicks, Shadow would try to hunt them, but now they have grown a bit too much for her liking. Here are a few pictures of chickens and cat doing odd things.
Julia and Shadow walked passed each other seemingly oblivious to the other's appearance. This picture was taken just after the veggie napper incident.
Doc is inside the penn while Shadow is patrolling the outer edges.
It looks like Shadow is getting ready to pounce, but actually she is just eating grass.

Without a trace, Shadow slips out of the picture.
I missed one picture of Shadow and the chickens that I will probably include on my next post. Thanks for reading(and commenting!)!

Veggie napper

Lately some of our vegetables have gone missing. We have not caught the culprit yet, but we have a pretty good idea who has been stealing them...
She did not go without a lecture!

Kind of random, but you must know what goes on in our chicken coop!

Walk in the rain

The chickens were slightly on edge today because of the thunderstorms. I let four of them out of the coop, so they could explore and eat some grass. The chickens pictured are Charles(white), Julia(red), Lemony(black speckled), and Jasper(also white). They enjoyed their time outside, and hopefully will convert there new energy into laying some eggs!

New Chicken Practices

This weekend we tried a new activity with the chickens. We put leashes on them. Each chicken responded differently. Julia (Meez) ran around the yard trailing the leash. Lemony and Jasper just behaved as normal. I was able to take Jasper on a walk up our street!

I wish I had a picture of the chickens on leashes, but I have this one of the chickens we put leashes on.
