Proud (and grumpy) Richie

Today was such a beautiful day, I couldn't resist dropping by the chicken coop. And dear Richie, who was patrolling the outer edges of the aviary, came to greet me. He almost got a chunk out of the camera when I came a bit too close.

Richie is two feet tall(it doesn't sound tall, but it really is for a chicken), and comes up to just above my knee.
Here is where he nearly ate the camera...
Though a handsome chicken, Richie is not the nicest chicken in the flock, and it is always wise to give him a wide berth.

Proud little Doc

Doc has always been very sweet, and is now very happy that there are more Orpingtons on the block than just her and Richie. Of course, I don't think she knows about Tif's chickens, but if she did I am sure she would be pleased!

A Doc Wednesday

Here are some pictures of Doc. We got eight eggs today! That is a lot for the winter season, as they do not lay as many at this time of the year. Lets hope they keep up the good work.

Preening 101

You may wonder how chickens keep their feathers so clean. There is actually a lot of work involved. In their free time(they have a lot!) most of the time chickens preen. All birds do it to keep bugs out of their feathers, and keeping them smooth and soft.

They just run their beaks over each feather, therefore cleaning it.

Dr. Cute

Here is a very cute picture of Doc. My mom got a new camera for Christmas, and I was trying it out out make sure it worked. I wouldn't want to have her use it and it not work. That would just be too awful. So I tryed it out, and to my surprise it worked. Well, I had to know! Here is Doc:

Did you know Richie is really a decorated Navy Pilot? Oh yes, General Peck was his title.Here is a picture of him flying a 757.

What's up, Doc?

The great chicken, Doc. She is really Dr. Seuss, but Doc is much friendlier. You would never guess that she and Richie were siblings(its true)! Doc is a very cute and trainable hen.

Mr. High and Mighty

That's right. You guessed it. Who else would be "Mr. High and Mighty", but our own coop celebrity, Richard Peck! Here is another couple pictures of Richie ruling the roost, as we know it!

Wake up call

You might have already known that Richie is head in charge of waking up all humans on our little farm. Here is a video behind the scenes of how he does the difficult call. He is hoping to put a tutorial on his own blog, for those who are interested in learning how to crow.
